Replacing old underground sewer pipes can be fast and non-disruptive to your home and landscape when using pneumatic pipe bursting. This method does not require constructing a traditional trench to remove the old pipe. Instead, it uses a pneumatic bursting tool that pushes through the old, while at the same time, pulls in the new pipe behind it.

How Does Pneumatic Pipe Bursting Work?
Essentially, the bursting tool is a large hammer that drives through the old pipe, shattering the pipe with each blow. The bursting tool is inserted into one end of the host sewer pipe using an insertion pit. A winch is attached to the head of the tool and placed at the opposite end of the pipe. The winch line guides the bursting tool through the old pipeline. The new pipe is pulled behind the bursting head, laying the High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe behind it as the old pipe is replaced.

The head of the bursting tool is cone shaped, with the point entering the pipe. As the winch tension guides the tool and the compressed air hammers the head through the old pipe, each stroke shatters and cracks the pipe into fragments that are displaced into the surrounding soil. It is similar to a nail and hammer; each blow pushing the head of the bursting tool a little farther.
Benefits Of Using Pneumatic Pipe Bursting
The biggest benefit of using pneumatic pipe bursting is that it is a trenchless method that does not require that the ground be greatly disturbed to insert new piping. Homeowners do not need to have the yard surrounding their home dug up and ruined to have their sewer lines replaced. Other benefits include:
- Less time. Since no trench needs to be dug, the process is much faster than traditional pipe replacement.
- Less money. In most cases, using pneumatic pipe bursting will cost the same or less than traditional replacement or pipe lining. Since it is generally faster, less labor is needed, saving both time and money.
- Larger pipes. Using the pneumatic tool is the only trenchless option where the new pipe can be larger than the old pipe.
- Quality new pipe. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe is a durable, seamless material that is leak proof and rust resistant, important in the wet Northwest climate.
